CuroControl Mx in action for further RDE-measuring runs with plug-in-hybrid vehicles

It’s almost routine for the ElringKlinger Motortechnik GmbH: After the RDE-measurement of a VW Passat GTE and a BMW 225xe, a third full-hybrid vehicle has followed, a Mercedes C350e.

Implementation

Once again, the CuroCon GmbH, whose conventional fleet is more and more replaced by full-hybrid-and pure electric-vehicles, provided its test vehicle, a Mercedes C350e. ElringKlinger Motortechnik equipped that test vehicle with a mobile emission measuring instrument (PEMS) as well as further sensors. For the central collecting of all measurement data in real time the proven system CuroControl Mx was employed. By the identical measuring equipment and the same RDE-measurement section, a comparability with the results of the other test vehicles is given.

 

Findings

After the completion of the test runs the measurement results were prepared and subsequently contrasted in the individual driving modes. As expected the slightest consumption on track is achieved in the e-mode followed by the hybrid-mode. The SAVE-mode already caused additional consumption of approximate 20%. The CHARGE-mode was even appreciably higher with regard to the consumption. As already intended in the run of the other two full-hybrid-vehicles, the VW Passat GTE and BMW 225xe, the charging mode should only be used in the exceptional case.

The start with a full traction battery as well as the intelligent usage of the e-mode and hybrid-mode is energetic significantly better: On short distance the usage of a preferably pure electric drive is suggested. Whereas on long distance the electric drive is suggested at low load requirement and the combustion engine at high load requirement. This leads to an exploited battery capacity at the end of the drive. The operating strategy, which is deposited in the hybrid-mode of the Mercedes C 350e comes very close to that aspiration with the result of the lowest possible CO2-emission in this vehicle comparison. In contrast the NOx-emission in the hybrid-mode of the Mercedes is the highest. Thus, there exists some room for improvement of future hybrid-vehicles.
