evTrailer

In 2020, the research project evTrailer (electric vehicle Trailer), which had been running under the consortium leadership of CuroCon GmbH since 2015, was successfully completed.

The evTrailer research project was designed to create a self-sufficient, battery-powered drive module for truck trailers as well as vehicle trailers.

In addition to CuroCon GmbH, a number of companies and institutes were involved: the Fraunhofer Institute, the Institute for Combustion Engines and Vehicle Drives at Darmstadt Technical University, and Oswald Elektromotoren GmbH. It was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

The conceptual design as a manufacturer-independent, stand-alone system for use with any tractor required a completely new control and regulation system. The developed system is based on the software CuroControl®SRx.

The following advantages could be achieved:

  • Support of the tractor by the trailer's own drive system
  • integrated braking energy utilization
  • completely self-sufficient electric drive of the trailer
  • any tractor usable
  • Autonomous shunting without tractor
  • Improved starting on slippery surfaces

The development of the evTrailer ultimately also leads to a saving of resources and a positive influence of the hybrid system on nitrogen oxide emissions. In addition, driving safety and driving dynamics have been improved. Another argument for the purchase of an evTrailer: The truck has already paid for itself after 4 years - and that with a service life of more than 700,000 km.
