For the first time, ElringKlinger Motortechnik GmbH has now carried out real test drives to measure exhaust emissions and consumption on hybrid vehicles. This yielded interesting results on emissions and operating behavior.

Implementation

For the test drives, CuroCon provided a VW Passat Variant GTE full hybrid vehicle from its fleet. ElringKlinger Motortechnik rüstete das Testfahrzeug mit einem mobilen Emissionsmessgerät (PEMS) sowie umfangreicher weiterer Sensorik aus. CuroControl®Mx was used for the central collection of all measurement data in real time. The RDE measurement route starting at EKM in Idstein was specified in conformity with EU Regulation 2016/427.

Findings

After completion of the test drives, the measurement results were processed and the driving modes were compared. Erwartungsgemäß werden im E-Modus die günstigsten Verbrauchswerte erzielt. Hingegen sind die CO- und NOx-Emissionen ähnlich hoch wie im Hybrid- und GTE-Modus; ein höherer Anfangsladezustand der Traktionsbatterie bringt keine Verbesserung bei den Emissionen. The emissions performance in charge mode is striking: here, CO2 emissions/consumption are almost half and CO emissions are even a factor of 3 to 5 higher than in the other driving modes.

The results have confirmed that hybrid drives offer many more degrees of freedom than conventional drives. Drive components, their design and, in particular, the operating strategy still offer a wide field of development for optimization. Comparative test drives with other vehicles are already in preparation.
